Freud 150th Anniversary
Although the arguements advanced by these scientists tends to supplement the neurological approach to subjectivity, it might do well to recall Lacan's views on neurology. During a talk he gave to M.I.T. in the 1970s, Lacan was asked a question by Noam Chomsky on thought. In his reply, Lacan stated that he had seen enough E.E.G. readings to know that there was not a single thought in the brain (Rudinesco, 1997). These comments, which scandalized Lacan's audience, may be interpreted as an allusion to the overwriting of the real by the symbolic. Science takes the real as its object of study without attending to the veiling of the object by its representation. E.E.G. readings, for example, are representations, and for Lacan the representation, as in speech, is all that exists. The meaning of that which it refers to is invariably constructed within a chain of signifiers from which it is possible to hypostatize a concept only when the principle of metaphoricity at work in its meaning is obfuscated. Such obfuscation is part of the 'paranoic refusal of recognition' (Lacan, 1953: p. 93), the stabilization of the barred subject, in which communication, in this case that of science, 'always subjectively includes its own reply' (ibid: p. 93). Cambridge Assessment 150th Celebrations
For 150 years we have been at the forefront of enhancing education through assessment and 2008 is our anniversary. The first UCLES exams took place on 14 December 1858, in eight UK regions. There have been many changes to the education system over the years but the ethos that sparked the creation of UCLES (the former name of Cambridge Assessment) still drives our work today. British Columbia: 150th Anniversary (B.C. 150)
The 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia gives us a chance to celebrate all that we have achieved. It's an exciting time to be living, working and raising a family in British Columbia. We've made a lot of progress as a province, and we have a lot to look forward to in the years ahead. it is also an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on just what a remarkable province British Columbians have built since that day in 1858 when Sir James Douglas proclaimed the establishment of what would become the province we all cherish. Working in the Victoria legislature, you are surrounded by the evidence of our history. It's reflected in the hand-hewn stone staircases and panes of coloured glass, and in the faces of community leaders whose photos line the halls. You can see our history there in the Rose Garden built as a relief project by unemployed workers during the depression of the 1930s. It's there in the obelisk honouring Douglas and the statue honouring Queen Victoria, in the 19th century military drill hall behind the legislature and the cenotaph in front honouring B.C.'s fallen soldiers. And it is there in the Knowledge Totem Pole erected for the 1994 Commonwealth Games and the Olympic and Paralympic flags now flying in anticipation of 2010. But I also have the privilege of travelling beyond Victoria to every corner of our province, and everywhere I go I am always struck by both the rich history of each community and the intense pride British Columbians take in preserving our heritage. From the unique diversity of our First Nations, to the Gold Rush, to the remarkable expansion of our province through the post-war years, history is everywhere in every community from the Islands to the Kootenays, from the desert country of the Okanagan up through the heritage-rich Cariboo to the open spaces of the Peace Country and the ruggedness of the North Coast. Celebrating B.C.'s 150th anniversary provides us an important opportunity for both reflection and renewal, celebrating accomplishments while embracing the expectations of our future. It is a time for us to look back at the story of this place and the people who live here, and a time when each of us can search for a new understanding of the history that produced our present. I hope you will all take the opportunity with your families and neighbours to share in and help showcase our history and our many accomplishments in 2008. Participate in your community's local activities or visit your local library to learn about B.C.'s place in history. Be a guest of the Royal B.C. Museum in Victoria or Fraser-Fort George Regional Museum in Prince George; the Haida Heritage Centre being built on Haida Gwaii or Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre that recently opened in Osoyoos. These and the countless other community museums around B.C. provide an unparalleled opportunity to learn about the adventures, struggles, people, events and achievements that have helped shape our provincial identity. Each honours the spirit of the past, the contributions of our ancestors, the successes achieved and our vision of unlimited potential for the future. It is our time to showcase the story of the people, our province and our past. It's an opportunity to retell the rich record of the place we call home. And it gives reason for British Columbians -- urban and rural, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, from all our many diverse cultural backgrounds -- to talk about where we are, how we got here and where we want to go in the next 50 years. It gives us an opportunity to experience the "splendour without diminishment" that B.C. bears as its own, and to be inspired to continue building on the accomplishment and achievement that have made British Columbia truly the best place on Earth. Yours Truly, Premier Gordon Campbell Tags: british columbia bc 150 anniversary crown colony b.c. birthday canada destination bc150 best place on earth olympics |

150th TSD Homecoming - Austin
I spend whole weekend at Austin for 150th Anniversary Texas School for the Deaf Homecoming and few other activities. It was beautiful weekend -- nice and sunny. Nothing too hot like summer. Part of the reason, I came over there whole weekend because I provided small workshop for several deaf people there to understand little better about Wordpress. We all ultimately will use it as primarily tool for their future website. Very exciting. While I am in town, I went to Austin Association of the Deaf (AAD) for their 60th Anniversary. I was told there's over 200 people mostly senior citizen and older folks there due to TSD Alumni activities. (Hall of Fame awards) Also, CSD Interpreting Service had its annual award presentation, too. Very nice!! I was told that DPHH Austin had nice crowd there too that evening -- I didn't attend. What's more, RG from Sprint Relay gave away huge sign with light inside with imprint glasses over on it saying "Austin Association of the Deaf" and link to "www.SprintWithRG.com" What a great marketing idea!! I took a lot of pictures during the day and evening. You also will see some pictures of Vernon the Magic from Big Spring, Texas. He performed outdoor magic show and he did terrific job! He reminded me a lot like Matt "Magic" Morgan. See pictures: http://gallery.deafnetwork.com/aad60 Of course, many of my family members were in town. It was so good to see them all particularly my cousin Patricia & Lee and my sister Grace & her daughter Kacey thoroughly the weekend. My step mother Donna and Aunt Kathy were in town as well. On Saturday, we went to TSD campus for its 150th Anniversary Homecoming. It's my first time and its tremendous experience for me. I took over 200 pictures during the day and at the football game. I was told they had about 50 booths -- about half are in business and half is more of fundraising thing. I can't believe I saw so many people I knew from DFW area. See pictures: http://gallery.deafnetwork.com/tsd_homecoming2006 On Sunday morning, I went to Texas Association of the Deaf (TAD) board meeting. I haven't been to TAD meeting since I left administration about two years ago. It was so good to see everybody there. I am very exciting that TAD is going to Wordpress-based website!! More details on it soon! 1907 B&W Diesel 150th Anniversary Startup
Credit for this video goes to Niels Kristian Jensen of MAN Diesel SE (http://www.dina.kvl.dk/~nikrjel3/) A Burmeister & Wain air-blast injection diesel engine from 1907 located in a water pumping station at Ålborg, Denmark being started in 1996 for the 150th anniversary of MAN B&W Diesel A/S. At the time it was the oldest known B&W diesel to operate. It is very similar in design to the engine successfully built and operated in 1897 by Dr-Ing. Rudolf Diesel. Because it is an air-blast injection engine, compressed air from 45-62 bar (about 650-900 psi) is used to do the actual fuel injection. Fuel and blast air is delivered to the top of the injector by separate pumps, and when the cam opens up the injector, the very high air pressure at the injector forces the fuel down into the injection nozzle and into the highly heated air inside the combustion chamber. The blast air is actually delivered by an external air line to the engine during startup, and is disconnected when the engine is running to allow the internal air pump to take over.
