Jess Willard -vs- Jack Johnson 1915 For decades, heavyweight champion Jack Johnson sold the public on the idea that he had thrown his title loosing fight against Jess Willard in 1915. The story served him well up to his death in 1946. Then in 1967, a print of the original theatrical fight film surfaced, which included, surprise, a genuine knockout. This footage is to some, boxing's Zapruder film. The Willard-Johnson fight film is a remarkable piece of history. It was one of the most extensively photographed fights of its day, from multiple camera angles, and under excellent lighting conditions. The film shows Johnson making numerous attempts to KO Willard during the first 12 rounds. Johnson repeatedly charges Willard with the same attacks that put down Stanley Ketchel and destroyed Jim Jeffries. Willard however, is just too big to manhandle the same way that Johnson did against the smaller Burns, Ketchel and Flynn. Awkward as he was, Willard had excellent balance for such a tall boxer, a great left jab, uppercut, and good defensive skills. Willard also achieved something few other fighters did against Johnson; he forced Johnson, a defensive fighter, to be the aggressor. There's nothing about Johnson's performance in the fight to suggest he is holding back, or wants to throw the fight. There's little of the laughing, smiling or showboating as seen in Johnson's fights up to that point. Johnson appears all business against Willard. As for the KO, watch how Johnson's head pitches like a bowling pin from the force of Willard's right cross. Johnson is literally thrown against the ropes, not unlike Joe Frazier's knockdowns against George Foreman years later. Boxers are not very good actors, and Johnson wasn't acting here. The claim that Johnson was shading his eyes from the sun might suggest he was conscious, except for the fact he did such a poor job covering his face. Johnson's gloves were up for only a moment.
